DERRY CITY boss Stephen Kenny believes Monday night's comfortable League Cup victory over North West rivals Finn Harps illustrates the strength and depth that currently exists within the Brandywell club's set-up.
The Dubliner made five changes from last Friday's disappointing eircom League stalemate against Galway United with Conor Sammon, Aaron Callaghan, Kevin Deery, Gareth McGlynn and long term absentee, Mark McChrystal all starting against the Ballybofey
outfit and Kenny admitted he now faces a selection headache as he turns his attentions to the weekend visit to Tolka Park.

"It was a good win for us and a good performance," said Kenny. "A few players came into the side and showed the strength and depth that exists in the squad, it was a good result.

"We've got plenty of options at the back and it gives me a few headaches for Friday's game. It's the right type of headache because we've had a few injuries recently. Mark (McChyrstal) came in and did well and a lot of other players also did well.

"We haven't scored in the last couple of weeks so it was good to get three," he continued, "But we have been creating chances and just haven't been able to finish teams off."

The Foylesiders remain on course to win their fourth consecutive League Cup and Kenny confirmed the competition is still high on their list of priorities.

"There's only three domestic competitions so I don't know how anyone can dismiss any of them," he said. "Personally I've won the lot but you need to win things every year. No matter who you are or whatever competition you're in, you have to try and win. We're only an emerging team and we want to try and do well in every competition."

Former Dungannon Swifts winger, Niall McGinn tormented the Finn Harps' defence during Monday night's game and doubled the 'Candy Stripes' lead with a superb strike from 20 yards and Kenny singled out the County Tyrone lad for special praise.

"What a goal to score and what a way to open your account," said Kenny.

"Niall is capable of that, he doesn't realise the potential he has. It's his first year, I mean he only broke into the Dungannon team this year.

"He's a laid back lad and if he was to realise what he's got at his disposal, he could be a real quality player for us. He's very difficult to mark and he's a great outlet for a midfield player to look up and see someone playing so high up on the right."

Kenny had been critical of the state of the Brandywell pitch recently, however, he was delighted with the improvement for Monday night's game which he believed had greatly benefited his side.

"I just want to pay tribute to all of the ground staff because three weeks ago we played Sligo here and the pitch was extremely poor," said the Dubliner.

"I've witnessed all the work that has gone on in the intervening period and there's been a bit of growth. They've worked extremely hard on it to prepare the pitch for match night and the difference it makes is phenomenal.
