ILLIES Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Club will make history next week when hosting an Irish Senior International Tournament against a top notch Poland team at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel on Wednesday night next.
Indeed, making it all the more interesting is the fact that no fewer than three members of the local club will be involved in the tournament - Martin Lynch, Tyrone McCullagh and William McLaughlin - therefore, the event is expected to command signifi
cant local interest.
Also on the Irish team is former St. Canice's ABC member, Eamonn O'Kane, who is now boxing out of the Immaculata Club in Belfast.
The Polish team, who are using their Irish tour as preparation for the forthcoming Olympic Games in China, have sent a very strong team with no fewer than 10 of their boxers having participated in the World Championships with two of those in the party having qualified for this summer's Games.
A total of 12 contests will be down for decision - ranging from 48 kgs. up to the super-heavyweight division - and the Irish team will have boxers travelling from all over the country. The first bout is scheduled for 8.15 p.m.
Following the conclusion of the Buncrana tournament, the Polish side will set sail for Donegal Town for another promotion in the Donegal Town's Abbey Hotel, that event set for next Friday night.
Oak Leaf ABC in Tower Hotel
Meanwhile, the Brandywell-based Oak Leaf club in Derry will stage its end-of-season promotion in the Tower Hotel tomorrow night (Saturday) and topping that bill will be local flyweight, Tommy "Snooks" Long, who makes a return to the ring when he tackles the experienced Pat Rooney, from Clonard ABC (Belfast) in what should prove an entertaining bout.
In addition, Oak Leaf's highly rated recent gold medallists from the recent trip to Finland, Aaron Rogan and Gavin Moore, take on Carndonagh ABC's Stephen Doherty and John McDonagh (St. Joseph's ABC).
And while Rogan is certainly a crowd pleaser who had done well in his career thus far, he can't afford to take anything for granted when facing Doherty who, incidentally, is a year older.
The Carn man is a strong puncher and there's no doubt that he will take the fight to his Oak Leaf opponent.
In fact, Moore can expect a similar contest when he locks horns with McDonagh who has proved in the past that he can be a very tricky customer. Constantly refusing to take a backward step, patience may well prove the keep for the Oak Leaf boxer in what's sure to prove a very interesting contest.
Tomorrow night's full bill is - Oak Leaf Boxers first - Francie Stokes v. Conor Quinn (Clonard ABC); Josh Gallagher v. Pat Hegarty (Kildress); Paddy Mahon v. Kevin Quinn (Clonard); Michael Gillespie v. Shea Doherty (Mourne); Darren Quigley v. Dwayne Moore (Dungannon); John O'Brien v. Stephen Mulhern (Clonmany); Gerard Malone v. Mark Loughrey (Mourne); Raymond Rogan v. Brian McKernon (Clonard); Conor McBride v. Aaron Boyle (Mourne); Declan Smith v. Bernard Manning (Clonard); Aaron Rogan v. Stephen Doherty (Carndonagh); Gavin Moore v. John McDonagh (St. Joseph's); Tommy Long v. Pat Rooney (Clonard).
Doors open at the Tower Hotel at 7.30 p.m. with boxing to get underway at 8.00 p.m. and admission is £5 (adult) and £3 (concessionary) with full bar facilities available.
