Sir,
I'm sorry my ideas on policing annoyed my friend Charlotte Vij. But Charlotte's letter to the editor last Friday went on to express her own opinions.

It's correct that I retired some time ago and I haven't met the present Chief Constable, but friendship with chief officers can't equal experience in the job.

Is constructive thinking from those with experience not a useful contribution to the debate?

Encouragingly, however, I've had more positive comments from several serving officers.

Yours etc,

Norman Hamill
