Sad passing of Sarah Ann McLaughlin

The death took place at the Nursing Unit recently of Sarah Ann McLaughlin, Upper Gransha, Buncrana. Sarah Ann, the daughter of Charlie and Sarah McLaughlin was born on 28th February, 1913 and was the youngest of a family of eleven.

She lived in Gransha all her life and was involved in farming until she decided it was time to retire. She got a chalet at the Nursing Home where she spent fifteen very happy and contented years until her death.
She was pre-deceased by her seven b
rothers, Johnny, Andy, George, Charlie, Patrick, William and Dan, her three sisters, Kitty, Margaret and Mary. Sympathy is extended to her four nieces, Bridie and Sadie, Ludden, Jean, Tuyllyarvan, Margaret, Crana View, her five nephews, Fr. George McLaughlin, Greencastle, Paddy, Derry, William and Andy, Buncrana and Charlie, Milltown and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Sarah Ann was the aunt of the late Fr. James Doherty. She will be sadly missed by all her friends at the Nursing Unit. May She Rest in Peace.
An invitation has been extended to the Senior Citizens in the Buncrana area to a Social Evening in Omagh next Friday, 20th March. Replies please by Sunday to Jim Henderson, telephone 9321666. There is a free bus from Market Square at 6.30 p.m. All welcome.
The Swilly Gardening Club, starts the new season with the first meeting this Monday, 16th at 8pm in the Angler's Centre. Guest speaker will be Denis Doherty, who will answer all your queries on sowing and maintaining your lawn, also a demonstration on sowing seeds etc. The competition is for best bunch of daffodils. Buncrana GAA would like to say a special thanks to all who helped make the 'Live Night of the Races' such a great success. To Malachy McCann and Sean Clerkin who came up with the initial concept, all the people who sponsored races, bought horses, supported and helped on the night, printed cards and posters, Inishowen GAA clubs, other Inishowen sports representatives and businesses who provided the jockeys, Liam the Poet our resident bookie, The Inishowen Gateway and Seamie the DJ. Last Friday night was the Buncrana GAA Club presentation awards night in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel. Guest of honour was the newly crowned Irish National Welterweight Boxing champion, William McLaughlin. William presented the Buncrana Senior hurlers with their County Junior Hurling Championship winners' medals for 2008. Alan Furlong and Adam Duffy received the senior and reserve hurlers of the year respectively. Minor footballer of the year went to Garvin Friel while Caolan McCann got the senior reserve footballer of the year. The senior footballers themselves voted Paul McGonigle the senior footballer of the year and David McConnell received the prize for the Club Person of the Year. William McLaughlin himself received a special award in recognition of his great achievement in the boxing field at national level. Congratulations and well done to everyone involved.

Rhyme Time is held every Friday mornings at 11 a.m. in the Buncrana Library. The aim is to learn new words and rhymes in a fun manner. Admission is free. Telephone 9361941 for more information.
Now that Lent is here why not come to 5, St. Mary's Road for a Scripture Sharing and Prayer evening on Wednesday nights during Lent from 8.30 - 9.30 p.m. There will be readings for the coming Sundays, reflections and silent prayer for 15 minutes. Buncrana GAA senior football training continues with outdoor sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7.15 p.m. sharp. Meanwhile indoor circuit training for everyone continues in the Youth Club every Saturday, at 6 p.m. sharp. Hurling training takes place on Wednesdays at the usual time in The Scarvey. The next Senior Executive board meeting will be held in The Scarvey clubhouse on Wednesday, 1st April at 8 p.m. All senior board members are urged to attend.
