I had to say a teary goodbye to a few friends over the past week, both of whom were setting off on their travels to different parts of the world.
One was heading to New Zealand to be with the love of his life and the other was shifting to Australia to fufil her dream of becoming a jillaroo, an Aussie term for apprentice female sheep or cattle rancher.

I still don't know why she felt she had
to travel all that way as she lived in Ardmore, there's plenty of livestock there to keep anyone entertained. If you're lucky you might catch a few sheep running around the local pub at the weekend, though not brought in of their own accord.

Australia seems to be the popular tourist destination at the moment, just why does everyone want to go there? Dodgy soap operas, Skippy, Jason Donovon and Crocodile Dundee. These are just some of the things that spring to mind when I think of the place, not exactly the greatest tourism advert for a country but it doesn't seem to be deterring anyone from visiting.

We decided to head to Sandinos for our final night of craic together with all our mates and to bid our fond farewells. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and getting down to the beats of indie-funk blasting from our section of the club, even more-so than the doorman's sense of humour when he asked me for I.D for the over 21's night.

What I like about the venue is the great mix of style and décor and it's one of my favourite places in the town to head to for a night out. My mate who was soon-to-be venturing off on his travels is also a fan and I quickly reminded him that he wouldn't find a place like Sandinos in the outback, though let's hope the loin-clothed natives are as friendly.

I forgot how hard it was to get a taxi home after a night out in Derry. With recent weather conditions you do not want to be having to trek back into country territory from the town, not that you'd survive the cold. I felt like phoning an ambulance at one stage because I thought I had caught hypothermia and I'd only reached Carlise Road!

We took shelter in the wee Quick-Snacks takeaway on John Street where it was full of young wans. It wasn't long before the constant questions of 'What was it like in Big Brother?' started flying from everywhere and though I'm all for people being innovators of style and accessorising, the one lad who had a chip hanging from his nostril didn't really go with the rest of his outfit.

The cold outside didn't seem so bad after all and as we decided to venture back out, my new best friend Mr. Taxi driver pulled up to whisk us off to more warmer climates and at that moment even my friend admitted that no amount of foreign sun would have beat his wee bed in Ardmore.

Seány.
