Derry holds day of anti-nuclear protest - The British Military Intelligence base at Clooney in the Waterside is one of three factors threatening Ireland’s neutrality, said the National Secretary of the Irish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Mr Dermot Nolan, at a rally at Brooke Park.

The factor involved is communications which would supply vital information on ship and plane movements coming in of the Atlantic. The day began with a vigil outside the British Army base at Ballykelly, which was followed by a run and cycle to Derry. About 200 people then marched from the Waterside Railway Station to Brooke Park for a concert and a rally.

Mr Nolan said nuclear deterrents did not operate in the way the public had been told they did.

“Now instead of talking about deterring war there is an awful lot of talk about using nuclear weapons to fight one.”
