A weekend of celebrating Scouts

Waiting for Video...

Every year local members of the Scouts gather to commemorate Founder’s Day, the birthday of the Scouts’ founding member, Robert Baden-Powell.

But this year, to mark the City of Culture celebrations, groups in the North West embarked on an entire weekend of celebration.

Hosted by the Errigal Scout County and co-ordinated by the four groups in the city, 12th Derry (St Eugene’s), 1st, 2nd and 3rd Derry (St Mary’s), 10th Derry (Springtown) and 35th Derry (Culmore), the weekend brought together over 1300 members from as far and wide as Ballymoney to Killybegs.

It was one of the first events that included the two scouting organisations of Ireland, the Northern Ireland Scout Council and Scouting Ireland, in what Scouting Ireland’s Chief Scout, John Michael Shinnick labelled “a spectacular sight” which he hoped would “ignite the flame” of the two groups working together more often in the future.

The weekend also witnessed a meeting of the National Managing Committee, held for the first time in the north of Ireland, with many of the participants including the Provincial Commissioner Wendy Morrow, staying to take part in the weekend’s events which included a Gala Dinner at the City Hotel on Friday evening.

Special thanks was given to Francine Moran of 10th Derry Scouts who played a key role in bringing the weekend’s festivities together.
