A group of young Italians visited Derry on Friday as part of a week long visit to Ireland.

The Italians are all members of the Catholic Abramo Community group which was founded in Vincenzo, Italy in 1989 as a result of Pope John Paul II’s call for a ‘New Evangelisation. The group is made up lay people, mostly under 35 years of age and their mission is the spiritual and catechetical formation of the laity through an active witness to their faith.

The young people were welcomed to Derry by Deacon Micheál McGavigan who has just returned to the Derry diocese after undertaking training for the priesthood in Rome.

While in Derry the Italian visitors toured St Eugene’s Cathedral, did a walking tour of the city, met with Aine McDaid, Youth Worker for the city parishes and members of the JPII Awards team and alsovisited the IOSA Youth Community in the IOSAS Centre in Muff.

Other engagements during their visit to Ireland included a meeting and Mass with Archbishop Charles Brown, Papal Nuncio to Ireland, a meeting with YouthLink in Belfast, involving multi-denominational youth groups and a visit to Stormont.
