Sweeney’s Chemist on Strand Road were awarded a Pharmacy in Focus Award for Social Commitment.

Chemist Killian Johnston, of Sweeney’s and staff travelled to the Ramada Hotel, to be presented with the award. “We run a number of health clinics in the community which is why we were nominated,” said Mr. Johnston. “We knew we’d been shortlisted but still we’re delighted our name was called out. We run smoking cessation clinics, health, sexual health and drink and drugs workshops for teenagers as well as classes within the Women’s Centre.”

One of those workshops sees teens given a life like doll which requires attention throughout the weekend, thereby giving youngsters a taste of parenthood. Sweeney’s family Chemist has been dispensing on the Strand Road for over 60 years.

“The challenge now is to continue doing the work we’re doing in order to improve the health of those we work with,” said Killian Johnston. The new CHEMI award category of ‘social commitment,’ was introduced to recognise the support structures in place within communities and the time, commitment and initiative shown by pharmacies. Judges praised the “creativity in Sweeney’s Chemist overall planning, implementation, business performance and sustainability by taking their services out to the local communities and by successfully linking with other community services.”
