Three 1st Ballykelly Girl Guides were honoured this week with a civic reception by Limavady Borough Council after achieving the Baden-Powell Challenge Award, the highest award in their age group.

Brittany McArthur (14), Shannon McLaughlin (15) and Erinn Melaugh (14) were rewarded for their hard work and hundreds of hours of dedication with a reception, attended by a host of proud family members and local
councillors.

The three Limavady Grammar School pupils were congratulated by the Mayor of Limavady, Cathal McLaughlin and deputy Mayor, Alan Robinson at the Monday night reception.

The teens had to volunteer in different areas - including health care and animal welfare - all to improve their teamwork skills and increase their awareness about diversity, healthy lifestyles and global issues.

The girls said they were delighted with their achievement and the long hours of volunteering had been worth it.

“It feels really good to make a difference and I think I was lucky to get the chance to do it,” said Brittany.

Erinn said she had enjoyed completing the challenge and felt proud of the award. Shannon said while the challenge had taken a number of years to complete it was worth all the effort.

Assistant Guider at 1st Ballykelly Girl Guides, Denise McLaughlin said she was extremely proud of the teens.

“We’re all just so glad the hard work put in by the girls has been rewarded, so we’re very proud of them.”
