Special Olympics Ulster and Foyle Special Olympics Club have announced details of an exciting fundraising abseil which will take place from the roof of Derry’s City Hotel on Saturday, September 1.

Regional Fundraising Co-ordinator for Special Olympics Ulster Ronan McCay, said: “Special Olympics provides a year round programme of sports training and competition for people with an intellectual disability.

“We help our athletes to fulfil their potential - in life, as well as in sport. Foyle Special Olympics Club is a great example of how Special Olympics changes lives for the better.

“It has more than 120 athletes, who take part in football, ten-pin bowling and swimming. Each of them shows great dedication to their sport.

“They deserve our respect and our support.

“Our abseil on September 1 gives people a great opportunity to both challenge themselves and raise vital funds for our excellent cause. It will be a hugely enjoyable and rewarding event for everyone who takes part. Every penny of profit from the day will be invested in our athletes - and every penny will make a real difference for them as they pursue their dreams through sport.

“I would urge anyone interested in participating to get in touch with me as soon as possible, either on 028 9089 2996 or at ronan.mccay@specialolympics.ie.

“I also want to thank the City Hotel for accommodating us for this event and City Cabs for their sponsorship. Their support is greatly appreciated.”

Chairman of Foyle Special Olympics Club Richard Edgar added: “Foyle Special Olympics Club is one of the biggest and most active Special Olympics clubs in Ireland.

“We are delighted to be working with Special Olympics Ulster on this joint fundraiser and look forward to it being a great success.

“I hope people from throughout our city and across the northwest will sign up to take part.

“If they do, they will know they are making a very positive difference for our local athletes.”

Speaking on behalf of the event sponsors, City Cabs, James Deehan said: “Special Olympics really is a great cause and we are delighted to be supporting this fundraising abseil.

“We look forward to helping raise lots of money for Special Olympics Ulster and the local Foyle club.”
