Decision time for Derry “Bhoy?”
I FEEL the commencement of the New Year will bring interesting times for Derry’s Celtic star, Paddy McCourt.
Ian Holloway, the new boss at Crystal Palace, is a long-time admirer of McCourt’s silky skills and he was hoping that the midfielder would sign a pre-contractural agreement.
In fact, when he held the managerial reins at then Premiership side, Blackpool, it’s no secret that Holloway also tried to sign the “Derry Pele,” and it appears that he’s been out of luck again.
McCourt is believed to have knocked back Holloway’s latest approach, insisting that he wishes to see out his current contract at Celtic Park.
Of course, the player’s decision is totally understandable given that the “Hoops” remain in the Champions’ League, but one can only wonder if Paddy will be of the same opinion come the end of the season?
Despite his undoubted skills, plus the fact that McCourt remains a clear-cut fans’ favourite, he has failed to nail down a regular first team place and he may well decide to leave Neil Lennon’s regime to further his own career.
Meanwhile, I’ve also found it very interesting to see James McClean featuring recently in a central midfield role for Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland.
Indeed, O’Neill has suggested that McClean’s physical strength would prove to be a major asset in such a position and that it would help James progress as a player.
I couldn’t agree more with the Sunderland boss and I also feel that James could well progress to holding a central position or, possibly, as an attacking left full-back.
