Eamonn McCann - Her Majesty just got a £6m pay rise
I see that the Queen (I might as well immediately head off the objections of those who were criticising one my neighbours last week for not giving her her proper title: Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith) has just won a 20 percent pay rise.
Her Maj’s income is index-linked to the profits of the Crown Estate, rather in the way - in fact, exactly in the way - that bankers’ bonuses are related to the level of ill-gotten gains recorded by the outfits they work for. In the year to March 2012 the Estate coined a profit of £240 million. The Queen takes a 15 percent cut, bringing her 2011-’12 stipend up to £36 million - a rise of £6 million over the previous year.
And her in the public sector, too
Everyone who has been smiling with pleasure at the presence in the North of Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God etc. will no doubt concur in the sentiment of Crown Estate boss Alison Nimmo that, “Everybody is going to be happy about this.”
Well, not everybody. Readers will hardly be shocked to learn that we in the curmudgeon community take a contrary view. In fact, if I ever get a chance to shake hands with the woman, I’ll give her a bit of my mind
