Ford on Saville

Alliance leader David Ford's description of the Saville Inquiry as "pointless" was insensitive, infuriating and ignorant.

His view would have done some of the most blinkered unionists of the old Stormont regime proud.

It revealed unacceptable complacency towards grave events in this city. It has raised questions about Mr Ford's judgement and his suitability for the post of justice minister. It would have been better if he had unreservedly withdrawn the comment before he met Bloody Sunday families.

Of course, depending on the outcome of today's Stormont vote, we may not need a justice minister. But, hopefully, the DUP will at last show some courage and do the right thing rather than indulge the Ulster Unionists' absurd posturing.
