Gangs on the Walls

Councillor Maeve McLaughlin's description of the City Walls as an 'open-air shebeen' is an accurate one.

Recently, as a result of drunken attacks on the Memorial Hall, a police landrover had to sit outside during the Foyle-Ulster Scots concert.

I was struck by the fact that many elderly people had travelled from both sides of the border to hear the Alexander Brothers and various bluegrass acts, while outside groups of sullen youths with chips on their shoulders and cans in their hands were demonstrating how hard done by they are.

Yawn…yawn! I was often bored in my youth but it never manifested itself by inflicting violence on others.

We're trying to improve the tourist image of this city – while these gangs continue to maraud our historic walls, it's going to make the PR task ever more difficult.
