The Doc’s Prescription - A Very Welcome Three Points

LIKE SO many Derry City supporters travelling to the Brandywell last Friday night, I would have settled for three points irrespective of the performance.
And in the end the Brandywell Faithful got that wish but as a welcome bonus, I also thought the team produced a fairly decent performance against Bohemians on the night.
To put things in perspective, I think it’s important to note that Bohemians are clearly a “middle of the table” team who actually have the lowest “goals for” total in the Premier Division. However, their “goals against” column in the table indicates that they are a difficult team to score against which makes Derry’s 2-0 victory all the more impressive.
Bohemians started cautiously allowing Derry to enjoy no shortage of possession and the Dubliner were happy to play on the break in search of goals. And having deployed such tactics it came as no surprise that Bohs rarely caused Derry keeper, Gerard Doherty, any real concern during the opening period.
And while Derry didn’t create too many clear-cut scoring chances themselves, the “Candy Stripes” will have been delighted to enter the break one goal to the good thanks to Conor Murphy’s strike.
I felt the second half was a case of more of the same with City enjoying plenty of possession but without really threatening to add to their first half goal.
Stephen McLaughlin’s late strike eventually settled the nerves and I’ve no doubt that Derry supporters returned home in a happy frame of mind. I’ve no doubt either that all Derry fans will welcome the return to active service of Stewart Greacen and while the Scot is clearly lacking match fitness, he was the dominant figure in the home defence and his organisation was superb on the night.
I felt the performance of Owen Morrison was another plus on the night for the manager as he was normally at the centre of all things creative.
In the end it was a decent display which was rewarded with three much needed points but Derry will face tougher examinations of their credentials before the season is over.
