The Doc’s Prescription - Big turnover of players at Arsenal

Recently there was a photograph of Arsenal taken before their Champions League quarter-final home tie against Valencia in April, 15th 2009.

Nothing illustrates the problems Arsene Wenger has holding on to players better than this photograph because seven of the 11 players have been sold on and released free.

In the world of football, players are always on the move but for a club of Arsenal’s stature to have sold almost an entire first team is amazing.

Only Theo Walcott, Kieran Gibbs and Lukasz Fabianski still remain at the club from the 11 who took the field that night.

Now any team challenging for title honours must have a core of players who are around for a few years and then the manager can bring in a few new players every season to add depth to his squad.

Nowadays, however, clubs like Chelsea, Man City and Man United have the financial muscle to buy even Arsenal’s best players and of course Continental giants like Barcelona and Madrid also have the same cheque book power.

Wenger, under these circumstances, has a really difficult job keeping his club in the top four of the Premiership and this season it might just be a step too far.
