Brendan Rodgers (below) will attempt to rebuild Liverpool using the same footballing philosophy adopted by both Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Brendan Rodgers will attempt to rebuild Liverpool using the same footballing philosophy adopted by both Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley.

Those men based their game on ball retention and that’s exactly what Rodgers did at Swansea last season. As a young boy, Rodgers, like many of his generation, fell in love with football played the Liverpool way.

That was the era of Toshack and Keegan followed by Rush and Dalglish when swashbuckling style was feared all over Europe.

Of course, as well as restoring a certain style of football, Rodgers must also deliver success and breaking into the top four in the Premiership will not be an easy task.

Recent incumbents at Anfield, Gerard Houllier, Rafa Benitez and, indeed, even Dalglish himself, were all “guilty” to some extent of playing a breand of football that was unrecognisable to many Liverpool supporters.

Rodgers’ attitude towards Andy Carroll is clearly states that the new supremo will be playing a style of football that doesn’t require a towering centre forward renowned for heading goals.

As the new Liverpool side begins to take shape, the Anfield Faithful will, in the short term, be entertained but whether that will bring league or European success is also story entirely.
