TO anyone not sure why the Champions League is such a big deal then take a look at the latest earnings of the top clubs in last season’s competition.

Winners, Chelsea pulled in an incredible £47 million while defeated finalists, Bayern Munich earned £33 million. The two giants of Spanish football Barcelona and Real Madrid between them had to make do with a “paltry” £63 million while Man United grossed £27 million despite their earlier than expected exit.

Newly crowned Premiership champions, Man City didn’t get out of the group stages but this week received a cheque for £20 million which is pocket money to the Blues.

The city of Milan did okay as well with £55 million to split between Inter and AC.

How Spurs must look longing at all this money floating around when they know that even if they go all the way and win the UEFA Cup they will be lucky to get £10 million in revenue.
