CHELSEA Football Club’s Chief Executive, Ron Gourlay, is a very brave man or he knows something the rest of us don’t.

His recent pronouncement that “Fernando Torres is a world class striker and is the man Chelsea will go forward with.

“He’s a very important player who will score many goals for Chelsea next season,” claimed Mr. Gourlay.

Those comments fly in the face of the facts that the £50 million hitman has scored just 12 goals in 67 games since his arrival from Liverpool.

If Gourlay is ignoring the facts, then so too is Torres as the Spaniard has said that someone at Chelsea would need to tell him what’s expected of him next season!

I’ll make it very easy for him. “Fernando, you will be expected to become an automatic fixture in the forwards line; you will be expected to score goals on a regular basis and, obviously, you will need to play a hell or a lot better than you have done since you arrived at Stamford Bridge.

“Put it another way, Fernando, you really need to resemble the player who netted 65 goals in 95 starts when representing Liverpool!”

The doubt remains that Torres will prove to be another Andrei Shevchenko and, indeed, may never regain his previous form.

For Torres’ and, of course, football’s sake I really hope I am wrong.
