DID FABIO Capello stand on a point of principle and cost himself the England job?
From the outside it could look like that but I don’t think the facts bear that out.
Capello claims that he was undermined as manager when the F.A. took the decision to remove the captain’s armband from John Terry without consulting him or allowing him any input.
This seems reasonable but I believe Capello used this issue to provoke a dismissal from his job for other reasons.
Even Capello who has remained aloof from the English sporting press must surely know how unpopular Terry is among many football fans.
Secondly and more importantly, I think that Capello didn’t fancy his chances with this England team at the European Championships and realised this was an opportunity to walk away rather than put his reputation on the line at the Euros.
Of course Capello’s attitude and stance suited the F.A. who were known to be wanting shot of their Italian boss as soon as decently possible.
Notice that after Capello “walked” the only press statement issued in his name claimed that as part of his deal he couldn’t discuss details of the case.
So everybody’s happy since Capello leaves with a pay-out and his reputation reasonably intact and the F.A. can get on with wooing the ‘people’s champion’, Harry Redknapp.
I do love happy endings - don’t you?
