Culdaff hosts the Charles Macklin Autumn School

It’s Charles Macklin Weekend in Culdaff and as usual a host of events have been organised to celebrate the life of the acclaimed actor and dramatist Charles Macklin who was born in Culdaff.

The official opening of the festival, which is now in its 23rd year, takes place tonight and will be performed by writer, playwright and lecturer, Dr Liam Campbell. A packed programme of events has been organised for the weekend including concerts, book launches, lectures, music recitals, writing workshop, art exhibition, cultural tours and lunchtime talks.

One of the festival highlights promises to be a play called called ‘Lonesome Cowgirls’ in Bocan Hall on Saturday at 8.45 pm, performed by Balor Reps. The play has a country and western theme and will be one of the funniest plays seen in Culdaff for years. Creative writing classes with Dr. Liam Campbell can be booked for Saturday morning. tel: 9370634. Storytelling will take place in the pubs over the weekend and there will be talks by Sean Beattie, Rachel Magowan and Dr. Colm Farrelly. Dessie McCallion leads a walk and tour of monastic sites including Carowmore tomorrow morning and Jacqui Reed will open her Hedgerow Pharmacy for alternative cures also on Saturday.
