Derry faithful to embark on Pilgrim Slemish Climb

Ardmore Pastoral Council in Derry is organising a Pilgrim Climb of Slemish, in County Antrim, and is inviting people to join in from the other parishes along the Faughan where Saint Patrick founded seven Churches.

The Turas Naofa Padraig will take place on Sunday, October 14, and parish priest, Fr Neal Farren is hoping that the prayers said during the pilgrimage on the mountain where Patrick prayed for the people of Ireland will help to rekindle faith.

The Pastoral Council is planning to have several ‘Turas’ in the course of the Year of Faith which is underway in the Catholic Church.

Fr Farren believes that the Turas Naofa Padraig is a good one to start with. “St Patrick prayed as he herded his sheep on Slemish and we will ask for his intercession for a rekindling of faith in our parishes,” he said.

The Turas will get underway following 11am Mass in St Mary’s Church, Ardmore. There will be a cup of tea for the road in the nearby Pastoral Centre before departure by bus at 12.15 pm, and everyone taking part is advised to wear proper footgear for the climb.

The local parishes associated with the Churches founded by Saint Patrick include Ardmore, Strathfoyle, Waterside, Donagheady (Dunamanagh), Badoney (Plumbridge), Claudy, Banagher and Faughanvale.

Anyone who would like to go on the Turas is asked to leave their name and telephone number with the Ardmore Parish Office as soon as possible, to help gauge numbers and facilitate pick-up points in parishes en route to Slemish. The telephone number is 71- 349490.
