Help us get from Sainsbury’s to Tanzania!

If passion and enthusiasm alone could get you to South Africa, the staff from Sainsbury’s who are headed for Tanzania later in the year wouldn’t have to fundraise at all.
This year, as their chosen charity, Sainsbury’s Strand Road are getting behind Children in Crossfire and five members of staff have decided to do a lot more than just raise money.
Fiona Taylor, Cornelia Teymur, Richard Bowers, Margaret Gallagher and Paddy Johnston will all visit Children in Crossfire projects in Tanzania in October and are urging Sainsbury’s customers to support them as they begin the process of raising money for children in the troubled South African country who desperately need help.
Human Resources Manager Fiona Taylor said she’s delighted to be taking part and excited about the forthcoming trip.
She told the ‘Sunday Journal’: “We’ve all been involved with Children in Crossfire because they’re our charity of the year here at Sainsbury’s so it will be really amazing to see specifically where the money goes which is raised here. We’ve already met Dr, Trish Scanlan who runs the children’s cancer ward in Dar es Salaam and she’s so passionate about it.
“As a parent myself I think it’s heartbreaking to think that your child could be ill and would have to suffer in awful conditions because there isn’t enough money available.
“I’ve never done anything like this before so it’s a first for me but I really am looking forward to it.”
Nightshift staff member Cornelia Teymur said she was keen to take part because her working hours have meant she’s missed out on a lot of the fundraising which goes on the store during the day.
“I’m really excited about it. I was supposed to go to South Africa before but it didn’t happen in the end so I’m delighted to be going for such a good cause with my colleagues this time.”
Richard Bowers, who works in Sainsbury’s Beers Wine and Spirits department said he hopes the trip will spur him on to do more to help others.
“I think it’ll be interesting to see what Children in Crossfire do out there. I think the trip will open my eyes to what else I can do for them.”
Deputy store manager Margaret Gallagher said: “The work that Children in Crossfire do is amazing and hopefully when we come back we’ll be able to tell our colleagues here all about it since we’ve been doing so much fundraising here in the store.”
Employee Paddy Johnston, who’s also going on the trip, said:“It will be great to get out there. We’re all really looking forward to it.”
Among the fundraising activities planned for the coming months are a night at the races, a children’s fashions show, a firewalk and bagpacking throughout the store.
“We’re just asking customers and members of the public to fill the buckets up when they see them!” laughed deputy store manager Margaret.
