House in the Wells marks 40th anniversary

The House in the Wells, a refuge for street drinkers, will celebrate its 40th anniversary today with a cross community service.

The shelter, located at the bottom of Nailor’s Row overlooking the Lecky Road Flyover, was initially set up as a soup kitchen for alcoholics but has now evolved into a purpose built refuge providing accommodation for street drinkers.

The anniversary service will include Dr David Latimer from First Derry Presbyterian Church and Fr Gerard Mongan from the nearby St Columba’s Church, Long Tower. The deputy mayor will also be in attendance.

The anniversary will also be marked by the annual BBQ organised as part of Féile 2012. As well as the BBQ with chef Liam Crawford, there will be a miniature golf tournament, a pool competition and music from DJ Rory Farren.

A photographic exhibition of images from the 40 year history of the House in the Wells will also be shown throughout the day.
