Lotto boost for older people’s projects

Three north west groups working to provide support for older people have been awarded grants totalling nearly £447,000 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Out: Connecting Older People programme.

The Foyle Sign Language Centre has been awarded £191,304 to reduce the isolation of deaf older people in the north west, while Creggan Country Park Enterprises Ltd is receiving £55,410 to run a project to encourage 250 isolated older people in the city to volunteer for environment activities. The older volunteers will take part in outdoor workshops in Creggan County Park where they will be trained to carry out tasks such as tree and flower planting, guided walks and monitoring the numbers of butterflies, bats and birds. Waterside Women’s Centre has also been awarded £199,855 to run a range of activities to reduce social isolation.
