Local woman Mildred Garfield was celebrating winning the ‘double’ after being crowned the city’s pensioner of the year on Thursday night at Malvern House.
Mildred, a former Mayor, was previously named ‘Woman of the Year’ at a Gala ceremony earlier this year.
Speaking yesterday, Mrs Garfield said she was “delighted” to have won the award.
“It was a bit of a shock as I knew there were a lot of people in for this award, so I was really, really pleased to receive it,” she said.
The awards, organised by Older People North West and Age Concern Derry, aim to recognise the valuable contribution that many older people make to their communities.
Mrs Garfield was nominated in recognition of her voluntary work throughout the city, particularly in the Caw/Nelson Drive locality and also her work with the Foyle Women’s Information Network.
British Telecom continues to sponsor this annual event and provided a modern phone system for this year’s winner. Hotel Westport also provided sponsorship and a winning prize, and spot prizes on the night were kindly sponsored by Kelly’s Centra, Trench Road and The Ritz Bar, Spencer Road.
The Mayor, Councillor Kevin Campbell, also presented two highly commended prizes to Danny Feeney (Harmony Singers) and Maureen Gallagher (Gas Yard Older People’s Group).
