A calendar featuring unique archive photographs of Derry has been launched at an event in Derry’s Central Library.

The Libraries NI 2013 Heritage Calendar has been created using nostalgic images from the Bigger and McDonald archive which is held in Derry Central Library.

The pictures, which date from the 1920s and 1930s, provide a detailed insight into life in the North West before the Second World War.

Speaking at the launch event, Irene Knox, Chief Executive of Libraries NI, said: “The calendar is a fantastic collector’s item not only for residents of Derry-Londonderry but for family and friends, near and far.

“No doubt, it will bring back many memories for people from the city and the surrounding area and generate feelings of nostalgia as they remember days gone by.” The calendar is on sale priced £5 and is available to order from any public library in Northern Ireland.

The photographs were originally published in the Derry Standard newspaper.

The original glass negatives were saved from destruction by David Bigger and Terence McDonald who rescued the entire collection of 14,000 plates from a skip at the former premises of the paper.

This is the first time that Libraries NI has produced a calendar showcasing unique resources.
