Attacks will continue - Derry Brigade say: The Derry Brigade of the IRA said yesterday that attacks on security forces barriers at Strand Road RUC Station will continue.
The IRA statement followed a grenade attack on the barriers early yesterday morning which left three RUC men needing treatment for shock. The blast also shattered 16 windows in the North West College of Technology.
The IRA said they carried out the attack, the sixth since the barriers were erected in 1989.
Two grenade type devices were thrown at the barriers at the junction of Lawrence Hill and Strand Road shortly before 2am yesterday morning.
One of the devices exploded damaging a barrier and shattering windows in the technical college.
Three policemen manning the barriers were treated for shock.
The second device failed to explode and was defused by a British Army bomb disposal experts.
Carn Agriculture Show gets Presidential seal of approval: The President of Ireland, Mrs. Mary Robinson, yesterday made her first official visit to Donegal since her inauguration last year. Her first engagement on a short trip to the North West was a visit to the 80th Inishowen Agricultural show which she described as a “wonderful all round effort” by the people of Inishowen.
Despite the atrocious weather, thousands of people from across Inishowen and beyond turned out for the annual show, which this year took second place to the visit by Ireland’s First Lady. The President, accompanied on her visit to Donegal by husband, Nick, said she was delighted to be back in Inishowen, especially Carndonagh where her mother had been born and where she herself had spent many “magical” summers. Speaking to the large crowd she said she was; “delighted to be here at the 80th Inishowen Agricultural show which is a lasting testament to the hard work by the people of Inishowen”.
Anger at inaccurate and sensational report: The Mayor of Derry, Councillor Mary Bradley, is to write to the Press Complaints Commission, the independent body who investigate alleged misleading reports in newspapers, criticising a report in the ‘Daily Mirror’. The report had followed a Waterloo Street fire in which six Derry businesses were destroyed. Colr. Bradley said the report which claimed that British soldiers guarding fire crews had come under gun attack and stated the blaze had been caused by firebombs, as well as adding that fire crews were hindered from fighting the fire, had been totally misleading and served only to damage the image of the city. No shots were fired at soldiers and firecrews were not prevented from fighting the fire. RUC forensic teams had continued to examine the buildings damaged in the fire which caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage. As yet the cause of the fire has not been established but the IRA have denied any involvement.
