Memories are made of this...
The archives of the Derry Journal – the second oldest newspaper still in existence in Ireland – include thousands of photographic images that document the extraordinary history of a community over half a century.
For many years, this treasure trove of photos has been hidden away in dusty cabinets, never seeing the light of day - until now.
A new photographic compilation - ‘Derry Journal: The Lost Archives’ - tells the remarkable story of a place and its people in the years before the outbreak of the Troubles.
The images in the book represent a unique pictorial record of Derry during the 1950s and 1960s.
In the book - which is now available to buy from local booksellers - you come face-to-face with people from the past and wonder where they came from, where they went and what their story is.
Whether it’s photos of children at school, days out at the seaside or people simply going about their everyday lives, these images - many of them once feared lost forever - are a wonderful snapshot of times gone by.
The photographs featured on these two pages are just a snapshot of the vast array of images available in the ‘Derry Journal’ archive.
