Remembering Rosemount Primary
The above picture was unearthed as part of the preparations for the centenary celebrations for Rosemount Primary School. It would appear that this side could be described as one of the most talented school football teams ever assembled in Derry, as, the overwhelming majority of those pictured went on to taste varying degress of success in the game. Included are John Ug Clifford who shaped the lives of many a footballer thanks to Tristar FC, Michael Hutton who runs the Foyle Cup, Adrian OConnell who was a trainee under Brian Clough at Derby County as well as Derry footballing legends Hilary Carlyle and Seamus McDowell. The photograph was taken during the 1964 - 65 soccer season during which Rosemount won the McCormack Shield for the second time in their history. The team had come close to doing the double but were denied in doing so by Long Tower PS who defeated them three goals to two in the Primary Schools Cup Final held at St. Columbs Park. It seems this side could be described as one of the most talented primary school soccer teams ever assembled in Derry as the overwhelming majority of those pictured went on to taste varying degress of success in the game.
Included are John ‘Ug’ Clifford, who shaped the lives of many a footballer, thanks to Tristar FC; Michael Hutton who runs the Foyle Cup; Adrian O’Connell, who was a trainee under Brian Clough at Derby County; and Derry footballing legends Hilary Carlyle and Seamus McDowell.
The photograph is part of the proud sporting heritage of the Helen Street school, and will be included in a new book chronicling its 100 year history. There’s also a planned visit by President Michael D. Higgins and a special gala concert which will feature the voices of past pupils as well as those of current teachers and children. That’s being held in the Millennium Forum in May.
The photograph was taken during the 1964 - 65 soccer season, during which Rosemount won the McCormack Shield for the second time in their history.
The team came close to ‘doing the double’ but were denied in doing so by Long Tower PS, who defeated them three goals to two in the Primary Schools Cup Final held at St. Columb’s Park.
We’re short one name, for a player remembered (so far) by the nickname of ‘Twinkletoes’.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 10:22 PMjust seen your photo last week of the Rosemount Boys football team. Well the wee lads "Twinkletoes" is a Martin McColgan. Still like the soccer and is still a DerryCity Season ticket holder.
