Olympic promise was ‘magic’ for Savanna

Olympic Promise Child Savanna Cooper from Ballykelly had her big “once-in-a-lifetime” day this week.
That’s because the seven-year-old Ballykelly Primary School student was one of a select few special guest children at the Paralympics opening ceremony on Wednesday.
Savanna was born on December 20, 2004, which was declared ‘2012 Day’ by London 2012 chairman Lord Coe.
Every British child born on that day was invited to several Olympic and Paralympic events as part of the Olympics Children’s Promise scheme.
“I was so excited,” said Savanna, of her experience at the spectacular opening ceremony on Wednesday night.
“It was really good. At the pre-show there was a big plane in the sky and it was just magic!”
Proud mum Fiona said it was a brilliant opportunity for her daughter to be part of history. While she and husband Trevor were disappointed Savanna and the other Olympic Promise children didn’t have a role in the ceremony, as they were told seven years ago, she says it was still an amazing opportunity for her daughter.
“It is once-in-a-lifetime and even if we were a bit disappointed, it’s over now and Savanna can take away her memories.
“She had a front row seat beside the Paralympic flame and she was so excited,” she said. “Savanna is very special to us and it was fantastic for her!”
