The London Olympics may be over but Galliagh and Shantallow launched their very own version of the games in Galliagh Park yesterday.

The mayor of Derry performed the opening ceremony in Galliagh yesterday to launch the games, which have been organised by community workers from the Outer North area partnership as an alternative to bonfires.

The events got underway yesterday with qualifying heats for the javelin, shot putt, hurdles, long jump and triple jump competitions, as well as fun activities such as face painting and bouncy castles.

The sporting action will continue today and tomorrow, with the finals being held at a range of venues through the areas tomorrow night.

Heats will continue today at the Shantallow Community Centre from 2pm to 4.30pm for 4 to 12 year-olds and from 8.30pm to 11.30pm for 12 to 18 year-olds. Soccer heats will also be held at Leafair Pitches today with the finals taking place tomorrow evening. The under 12 finals will be held at the pitches between 1.30pm and 5pm, while the 12-18 year-olds final will take place between 10pm and 11.30pm.

Olympic action will continue in Shantallow too tomorrow from 1.30pm to 5.30pm for under 12s and from 8-pm to 10pm for 12-18 year-olds.
