Sailor statue planned for Peace Bridge

A new statue is to be erected close to the Peace Bridge to recognise Derry’s vital role as a naval base duing World War. The bronze statue of a Royal Navy sailor is to be erected at Ebrington Square close to the site of the proposed new Maritime Museum.

The statue is being erected by the Royal Navy Association and according to local branch secretary, Frank Brown, it will recognise the city’s role as the largest convey escort base during World War Two and commemorate all those who lost their lives during the Battle of the Atlantic.

The statue of the sailor, who will be looking across the river toward the city, is a replica of a Canadian Navy memorial in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The statue is presently being cast in Wales and it is hoped it will be unveiled on May 11th.
