Kids in Derry who want to beat the wet weather summer blues have been urged to get involved with action packed summer schemes happening in the city.

Derry City Council’s Summer Camp 2012 is well under way at St Columb’s Park Leisure Centre, offering a host of activites including football, wall climbing, badminton, tennis, racquetball, orienteering, table-tennis, basketball and swimming.

The city’s Mayor Kevin Campbell said he would encourage local kids to sign up for the scheme, and get the most out of their summer.

“The Summer camp has completed its first week of programmes and the youngsters have all had a great time. It’s the perfect excuse to get them out of the house and get them active this summer.”

Prices per week are £32.00 for one child. Discounted family rates are also offered for multiple children attending, at £60 for two children and £85 for three children.

Meanwhile the Western Education and Library Board’s (WELB) Rosemount Youth Centre’s annual Summer Scheme runs Monday to Thursday, from July 16 until August 10.

The day time programme will operate from 12.00 pm - 3.00 pm for children from P1 - P7, and will run a variety of activities such as, hairdressing, show and tell, fancy dress, events and day trips, face painting, a talent show and a barbeque.

The night time programme will run from 6.30 pm - 10.30 pm for young people aged 12+. There will be competitions held in football, pool and table tennis.

This year’s activities will include trips to Laser Quest; Lagan Valley Leisure Complex; Todd’s Leap (Zorbing) and Dundonald Ice Bowl.

The Youth Centre will also provide a skill gained accredited OCN Course in Law and Order which aims to engage young people from the area in positive development activities.
