The wait will be over on January 5 when The Venue opens its doors to host the first of many City of Culture events.

The city’s largest ever Tea Dance will evoke the glamorous heyday of the ballroom era and allow up to 1,000 individuals to enjoy an afternoon full of entertainment and dancing to sounds of a magical bygone era, the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s. The Tea Dance hosted in partnership with the Mayor, Kevin Campbell is a long running initiative that is being taken to a new scale in celebration of the city’s year as UK City of Culture.

Culture Company 2013 Chief Executive, Shona McCarthy commented: “Tea Dances have been a staple event on so many people’s social calendar for so long in the city, and we are delighted to be able to take it to a different scale and bring the warm and classical atmosphere to The Venue as part of the City of Culture celebrations. The 2013 programme aims to be fully inclusive and the Tea Dance is a great demonstration of how we will engage with the older generation in the city. ”

Mayor, Kevin Campbell said: “Derry City council has been hosting monthly tea dances as part of its Mayoral initiative for a long number of years now and they remain one of our most popular events. It’s a great way for older persons from communities across the city to come together to enjoy music, share stories and have a cup of tea. I am delighted the City of Culture have acknowledged the success of the initiative and incorporated it into its fantastic programme of events for 2013. The event will also be the first chance for the public to see the hugely impressive Venue site.”

Culture Company has linked up with the five Area Partnerships and various other organisations to distribute tickets, which are free of charge, throughout the communities. Transport from different areas in the city will be arranged to and from The Venue, details of which will be available closer to the time.
