‘We need your help’ - urge Foyle Hospice

The Foyle Hospice has revealed that it lost a staggering £25,000 sponsorship for one of its flagship charity events last year.

The shocking shortfall was disclosed this week by the Foyle Hospice’s Community Fundraising Manager, Noel McMonagle.

This loss in vital funding came about despite literally hundreds more people signing up for the Female Walk/Run last year.

Mr McMonagle told the ‘Journal’: “Last year we had almost 500 extra participants from the previous year, yet sponsorship monies were down £25,000 that year. This was a huge blow and highlights the change of the economy. The important thing is that people are signing up to take part -but the other thing is that whether it be as little as £5, £10 or £20, every single penny of sponsorship counts.”

Mr McMonagle knows that the recession has had a detrimental effect. “Times are hard, and we recognise times are hard,” he said, “but if people could please try and raise at least some money, no matter how small - that money is literally vital to us. Our registration fee basically covers the price of the T-shirts, goody-bags and the actual running of the event itself, so very little is left over. That’s why we depend so heavily on the sponsorship. Please ask your family and friends to sponsor you - every single penny raised through sponsorship is 100% profit for the Foyle Hospice.”

The Female Walk takes place on Sunday, June 3, at 1:30pm, and entry is £7. Forms are available from Foyle Hospice Fundraising Centre, 61 Culmore Road, 71. 359888 or Foyle Hospice Shop, Waterloo Place. www.foylehospice.com.
