The controversial Stendhal Music Festival has been cancelled due to "abysmal" ticket sales.
Entertainment co-ordinator Tim Ferris told the 'Journal' that just over 20 tickets - at least £70 at a go - had been sold. To break even the organisers had needed to sell 5-6,000 tickets.
The festival, due to take place next weekend, had been o
pposed by some local councillors and residents and the organisers were forced to go through a lengthy process to get an entertainments licence which they claim cost them time.
More than 40 bands had signed up to play and Mr Ferris said "everything was ready to go". He said: "It is with a heavy heart I have been emailing contacts telling them we have had to pull the plug but it's out of our control. It has come as s shock to us but it's a week before the show and deposits have to be paid; what do you do?"
Mr Ferris knows some people will question their credibility and experience but he says: "We're taking the experience on the chin" and that they are determined to pull it off next year.
He said: "It's not the lack of organisation, it's ticket sales. We've done everything we can except buy people tickets but as you know money doesn't come for free."
He added: "I want to thank everyone who helped us, it's very disheartening; it's a sad day."
