Limavady Deputy Mayor George Robinson believes a civic reception for RIR and TA soldiers returning to Limavady from Iraq and Afghanistan is justified for those who have "served with bravery".
A motion to hold a civic reception was defeated at Limavady Council last week.
However, DUP Ald. George Robinson - who seconded the motion - believes the idea is a good way to acknowledge “the tremendous courage of our local troops, from all political or religious backgrounds.”
He said: “Some of these men and women pay their rates in this Borough, and have done so for many years over many generations, but they do an exceptional job in exceptional circumstances.
“Their service to the whole community deserves proper and fitting recognition by Limavady Borough Council.”
Ald. Robinson added: “No-one is trying to glorify war. It is something that few of us can comprehend the horrors of.
“This is exactly why those who serve their country in the Services deserve to be fittingly recognised for their bravery.”
