A man has pleaded guilty at Derry Magistrate's Court to assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour.
The court that on January, 20, Conor McFadden, 20, of 75 Fergleen Park, was walking home with his sister after a night out and approached police who were dealing with a confrontational woman.

His solicitor, Paddy McGurk, said McFadden thought he could “sort out” the incident if he intervened. He was told by police to move on but he refused to do so. When police attempted to push him away he became aggressive and squared up to an officer. He kicked an officer twice in the leg and attempted to headbutt another.

Mr McGurk told the court: “Mr McFadden acted entirely inappropriately but there was no serious injury caused. This is clearly a case where he should have walked on by.”

Resident Magistrate Barney McElholm said: “Your use of homophobic comments towards police was offensive as was your use of American slang.”

The case was adjourned until next Monday, May, 12 when there will be a Specific Issue Report regarding community service.
