THE 2008 Young Bird season kicked-off with an area liberation from Navan, roughly 95 miles to the city, and 44 City of Derry Fed members entered 756 birds.
With the wind mainly northerly, velocities were well down but this race produced a phenomenal result for the Foyle RPS partnership of Mr & Mrs Paul Maxwell who absolutely stunned the Fed by taking the first six positions and having a total of nine bi
rds in the top ten!
Paul is, without doubt, a very dedicated fancier as this results would suggests. The Maxwell partnership took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th & 10th - excellent flying, especially into this area.
Other results were - 7th and 12th, A McCrudden; 11th and 18th, S Duffy; 13th, J McLaughlin; 14th, A Funston; 15th, 16th, 19th and 20th, McGettigan Bros.; 17th, G McLaughlin.
Meanwhile, Mullingar was the venue for the second area liberation and with a good forecast the birdage was at record level with 68 members sending 1562 birds.
Claiming top spot was hard working secretary Anthony McCrudden who had an excellent fly with five birds in the result to take 1st, 2nd, 15th,16th and 18th. No doubt Anthony will feature in the top flight through the forthcoming season.
In 3rd spot was Kevin Payne who has been working hard with his young bird team while last weeks winners Mr & Mrs Paul Maxwell had yet another dream team performance taking - 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 17th.
Other results were - 9th, P Hegarty & Son; 10th, P Breslin & Son; 11th & 12th, Cooley Bros.; 13th, J & D Kelly; 14th, S McGrotty; 19th, T McDaid; 20th, L Flanagan & Son.
Maiden City RPS
Last week’s race was from Tullamore, some 125 miles in some very poor weather conditions, the birds were released on Saturday at 11.15 a.m. and having another great race was the Burndennet loft of the McGettigan Bros. who took top honours.
In second spot, having his first Young Bird race of the season and also taking 7th spot was club chairman, Pat McLaughlin. Prominent again in 3rd place were the two young lads, Robbie Hegarty & Johnny Killen.
In 4th spot, another loft in the top six every week and still leading the points trophy, were Dunne & Quigley.
Other results - 5th, E. Quigley; 6th, S Morrison; 8th, R Lyle; 9th, M Concannon; 10th, P Cregan.
Rock Flying Club
John McLaughlin’s loft remains in superb form in the Rock club having again figured prominently last week when taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions. These birds have been bred down from his Talbenny winners and they appear to be reaping rewards.
The Lenamore Loft of Cathal Fox finished in 4th and 6th positions while Sean McMonagle, Beechwood, secured 5th spot while Willie & Darren Hamilton, Messines Park, finished in 7th and 9th positions.
A man making a comeback after 20 years out of the sport is George Diver, from Coshquin and he did well when securing 8th place in his first race.
Basketing as usual in the Marian Hall.
