A big week in track and field beckons with the National Senior Championships set for Santry Stadium in Dublin while in Bedford the annual Schools' International will feature local teenager Jamie Herron, who has been selected for the Irish team in the Girls' high jump.
Herron gets her Irish Schools vest on the back of some impressive performances in recent months at both school and club level, having featured at national and provincial level regularly this season and is richly deserving of her place in the squad.
Meanwhile in Santry, Jason Smyth and Tom Carey look the best medal hopes from the local athletes travelling south for the weekend’s National Seniors. Smyth is building up for the Paralympics in China in late August while Irish record holder Paul Hession has indicated his preference for the shorter sprint and will be a clear favourite, the Eglinton lad could medal over 100m and again in the 200m. However Stephen Maguire will make the final call on which events Smyth will contest over the weekend.
Carey will probably go over 400 hurdles and is also a definite medal prospect in the tough one lap event. He will travel buoyed up by his recent run in the Europa Cup meeting in Estonia and should be in the mix when the serious questions are asked tomorrow afternoon and again in the final on Sunday.
