ANOTHER week, another win and another assist for Derry City's flying winger Niall McGinn who is fast becoming one of the most talked about talents in the eircom League.
MICHAEL WILSON reports
Such is the impact the young midfielder has made during his relatively short stay with the ‘Candy Stripes’ that a number of cross-channel clubs have already been alerted to his precocious skills with Ipswich believed to be m
onitoring the former Dungannon Swifts man.
However, after setting up Mark Farren’s winner in Friday’s North West derby victory over Finn Harps to keep Derry on course for a place in Europe next season, McGinn dismissed any potential transfer talk to confirm just how much he is enjoying life at the Brandywell.
“I am loving playing for Derry City,” revealed McGinn who has played a pivotal role in the resurgence of Stephen Kenny’s men.
“It took me a while to settle in but I am just loving it at the minute. To be honest, I haven’t listened to the stories because all that concerns me is playing. I am just happy to be involved with the team, whether it’s setting up goals or scoring goals and I was delighted to play a part in the goal which won us the game.”
The midfielder admitted Friday’s win wasn’t the prettiest of performances from Stephen Kenny’s men but insisted the players were more than happy with the outcome.
“We have to be happy with the result. The boys dug in hard and it was a great three points. We would have took a 1-0 victory before the start of the match.
“We carried on from last week’s game where we played well. We kept the same shape with Tommy (Stewart) coming in for Sammy (Morrow). We stuck to 4-4-2 but to be fair to Finn Harps they came out and stopped us from playing but we battled hard and got the three points.”
McGinn says there were times during the match when he wondered if it was going to be the home side’s night as Harps put up a dogged defensive wall which coped well with Derry’s attack.
“To be honest I thought it was going to be one of those nights because in the first half there wasn’t many clear cuts chances for either team and in the end I was just glad we got the goal. Harps deserve credit and hopefully they can go on and dig themselves out of trouble.
“Any time we have played Harps this season they have put it up to us and made it very difficult so you have to wonder why they are in the position they are in,” he added.
