TO WIN a 'major' at any local golf club is considered a memorable achievement for any player, but to win a big event twice is certainly something to savour and, no doubt, Ballyliffin's Joan Doherty, will have enjoyed last weekend.
The 21 handicapper not only scooped the Lady President's Prize (Mrs. Margaret Monaghan), but it was the second such success recorded by Joan who also won the Lady President's Prize when serving as the club's Lady Captain.
The esteem in which Mar
garet Monaghan is held was highlighted by the fact that 66 ladies competed for the top prize with a large entry of 130 gents competing for the President's Prize to the male membership.
Glorious sunshine was the order of the day while the atmosphere experienced in the clubhouse afterwards certainly boosted what was a highly successful competition organised by a highly popular Lady President.
Congratulations to Margaret on what was a wonderful occasion and good wishes are extended for the remainder of her tenure.

Lady Captain, Virginia Byrne, wishes to remind all lady golfers that an Open competition will take place on Tuesday next, July 7th - during Open Week - and the entry fee for non-members has been reduced to 25 euro.
City of Derry Ladies
The Ladies at City of Derry played for Mr Andy Meenagh's Captain's Prize to Ladies on Tuesday last and Gerda Laird post a superb 45 points to take top honours, the 22 handicapper winning with three points to spare.
Full results were - Captain's Prize to Ladies - 1, Gerda Laird (22) 45 points; 2, break of tie, Michelle O'Sullivan (26) 42; 3, Kathleen Hutton (25) 42.
The competition on Tuesday next will be the rescheduled North-West Summer Meeting. The draw for the Summer Meeting is as previously published and has been sent to participating clubs.
The final of the North-West Scratch Cup will also be played on Tuesday next, commencing at 2.00 p.m. The finalists are Naoimh Quigg, City of Derry and Helen Jones Strabane.
Redcastle Ladies
The glorious weather attracted a great turnout of for Rosie Agnew's Lady Captains Day at Redcastle last weekend. Indeed, Jenny Flanagan featured in most of the major prizes this season so far and the in-form 17 handicapper continued her consistent performances to take top honours when returning a score of 67 nett.

Meanwhile the NSPCC competition was held on another fine day for golf with Jenny Flanagan again appearing on the winners' podium in the company of playing partner, Hazel Browne, this pair accumulating a winning score of 42 points,

Tomorrow's competition is the Pen Breast Cancer Awareness for Ladies & Gents while next Wednesday, the Brown's Auto Ladies Open Singles Stableford competition will be staged.
