Olympian success at YAL Final

OLYMPIAN Athletic Club members competing at the Northern Ireland Young Athletes League Final enjoyed an impressive return having secured 16 medals in total - three gold, nine silver and four bronze while coming fourth overall.
In the Under-13 category Lara McIvor claimed bronze medal in the Shot Putt event; Edward McGrory also secured a well deserved bronze medal in the boys Under-13 Long Jump and Nadine Barlow won gold with a personal best throw of 8m 45cms in the Under-1
5 girl Shot Putt - a full metre ahead of the second placed athlete.

Meanwhile in the Under-15 boys javelin competition, 13 year-old Ryan Barlow showed great potential throwing 30 metres to claim the bronze medal.

Jennifer Gillespie, also contesting in this age category, bounced back from injury with a great performance in the 75 metre hurdle event, narrowly missing out on the gold at the last hurdle. She showed her versatility running well in the 100m sprint to add another medal to her tally securing third place.

Shane Quinnell, contesting both the Under-17 A string High Jump and 100m sprint, leapt to a 1m 73cms win to claim the gold medal while winning silver in the 100m sprint. He went on to claim another gold in the B string Long Jump.

Staying with the Under-17 age group, John Coyle won silver medal in the Triple Jump before claiming another silver in the A string Long Jump competition.

Kevin McLaughlin threw well over 11 metres to claim the silver medal in the Shot Putt and in the Under-17 youths relay race, Shane Quinnell, Conor Cummings, John Coyle and Kevin McLaughlin came second, narrowly edged out by mid-Ulster for the gold.

Minor Girls - Hayley Quinnell; Nicole King; Bláithin Kerr; Niamh Henderson; Shannon Quinn; Intermediate Girls - Sarah McDermott; Claire Meenan; Naomi Toland; Colts - Rory Cummings; Keelan Hamilton; Boys - Eóin McDermott; James Cooke; Youths - Conan Lundy; Niall O’Doherty; Matthew Gallagher.

The mentors at Olympian AC would like to congratulate Pearl Doherty who was selected for the Celtic International to be held in Scotland and Olympian club leader who was invited to officiate at the Firemen’s World Track & Field Championship in Liverpool.

Olympian training will be taking a short break until Tuesday, August 26th when it will reopen for training every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7.30 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. at the Templemore Sports Complex. New members are welcome.
