This month the 'Journal' reported how the IRA issued a statement denying they prevented the wife of Derry man Paddy Flood, whose hooded body was found near the South Armagh border, from contacting either her own family, the Flood family or their local clergy about his abduction. The Bishop of Derry Dr Edward Daly said the IRA had told Mrs Elizabeth Flood not to contact him about her husband's disappearance, a development he described as 'sinister'.
Also this month, the IRA said the “amnesty” they offered to informers did not apply to Michael Williams, who left the city under a death threat in March.
During August, Derry City FC also hosted two glamour friendlies against English First Division teams Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. World Cup stars Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker and Irish international Dennis Irwin all appeared at the Brandywell with a host of other top-class professionals.
