He describes himself as the bigger, fatter brother of Captain Jack Sparrow, and he even admits borrowing his wife's eyeliner to draw on his beard.
Last year the show took on a wild west theme, and next week they’re back at the Millennium Forum, this time as pirates.
“It was my idea to do a pirate show,” Kevin told the ‘Journal.’ ”Most of the kids dress up when they come to the Singing Kettle
and pirates are a fantastic thing to dress up as.
“A lot of the adults dress up as well.”
Expect plenty of nautical nonsense when the show lands in Derry next week. Kevin and the gang run into trouble when their ship HMS Kettle hits rocks. They soon discover that plundering pirates have made off with the precious cargo of kettles and taken the booty back to their hideout on Pirate Island. Cue lots of songs the kids can to join in with, including “Pirate Crew”, “The Drunken Sailor” and “Over the Irish Sea”.
“We usually get a good mix of Singing Kettle regulars and some newcomers to the show,” said Kevin.
“We’re always keen to get new kids in and teach them the songs.
“For us Derry is a wonderful place to take the show, we’ve been coming for eight years and each time we get a great reaction. And this year we’re sure the people will take us in again.”
Kevin was formerly stage manager for the Singing Kettle before he jumped on the stage one day, started larking about and landed himself one of main roles. Pirate Island is the must-see children’s show of the summer. Even Bonzo the Dog will be invited to walk the plank. There may even be a chance to dress up on stage!
