Joe gets the lowdown on Craigavon Bridge and new Transport Hub

Ulster Giants celebrates civil engineering heritage across the north, and in this episode Joe Mahon relates the story of the origins of the Ordnance Survey, when an eight-mile baseline was measured across the shore lands of Lough Foyle to begin the triangulation for the first large scale mapping of Ireland in the 1820s

According to the programme, “the accuracy achieved by Thomas Colby and his team of surveyors, using ingeniously contrived, but essentially crude instruments by today’s standards, is still a truly remarkable feat.”
Later in the episode, Joe Mahon travels back from the cityside over to the Waterside Railway Station in Derry for a quick history lesson on the city’s travel infrastructure.
he will also discover how the listed Victorian building has been carefully refurbished and incorporated into the North West’s brand new £27m Transport Hub.
