Donegal County Council have agreed to an interim funding package to help the development of Gaelic games and rugby in the county.
Both the Donegal Co. GAA Board and the Donegal Community Rugby Project had applied for separate funding packages to help develop their respective games at grass-roots level. At a recent council meeting, Letterkenny Councillor, Dessie Larkin urged the
County Manager, Michael McLoone to look at the possibility of providing a part-payment.

Clr. Larkin said yesterday, he was delighted to confirm that money will be provided to both groups.

“I know that some councillors were a bit weary about providing funding for these bodies but what we must realise is that this money will be going right down to grass-roots level. These groups are working with young people on a day to day basis and they have exciting programmes and new plans set out which we can support.”

According to Clr. Larkin, Donegal Co. Council will provide the GAA and the Community Rugby Project with 25% of their funding application - E12,500 to the GAA and E7,500 to the rugby.

“Councillors must now decide whether to back a proposal to fund these groups in 2009 and 2010. I for one will be in favour of that proposal and hopefully my fellow council members will too.”
