Inquiry into Burt family's deaths expected soon
An independent inquiry into the deaths of a Burt woman and her family in Co. Wexford is expected to report to the government by the end of the month.
Ciara Dunne (24), her two children, Leanne(5), and Shania (3), and her husband Adrian Dunne (29), were found dead in their Monageer, Co. Wexford home last April. An estimated 2,000 mourners attended the Burt funerals of Ciara (nee O'Brien) and her two daughters as a mark of respect to the O'Brien and McDermott families. Adrian Dunne was buried in Boolavogue in Wexford.
The bodies of the family members were found three days after the family reportedly visited an undertaker to make arrangements for the funerals of the couple and their children. It had been reported that authorities had been aware of a risk to the safety of the children.
Chaired by barrister Kate Brosnan, the inquiry has been closed to the public. Its members include retired Garda commissioner Jim McHugh and Leonie Lunny, chief executive of the Citizens Information Board. The inquiry is expected to address the circumstances surrounding the deaths as well as the exchanges between service agencies, emertency services and the family in the lead-up to the tragedy.
The Sunday Business Post has reported that the inquiry may also focus on whether authorities have enough power to intervene in cases where there is limited information about the welfare of a child. There have been conflicting reports from the Health Service Executive (HSE) and An Garda Síochána about when gardaí became aware of the Dunne case and when the HSE was informed.
According to the Post, the inquiry team is expected to report its findings to the government by the end of this month. The Minister for Children and Minister for Justice will decide whether to release the findings after they have reviewed the report.
